2025 Road Trip: Denver and Colorado

Hello, friends, and welcome to the first of a series posts showing off the photos I took on my road trip vacation. My partner and I had been planning this trip since we got back from our 2019 roadtrip. Covid, and then a series of other events, forced us to put it off several times. Originally planned as the celebration of my 49th birthday, it became the celebration of my 45th. While I would have been delighted to make the trip sooner, and gone on some other birthday adventure this year, it was definitely worth the wait. I have chosen to break the photosets up by location rather than day.…

    Samhain Self-portraits 2025

In all sincerity, it is my ambition to do at least one self-portrait shoot each month. Despite that, I literally can’t remember when the last one was. (I could look it up, obviously. I won’t.) Frankly, I’ve been depressed, which makes self-portraiture uniquely difficult. But, as you can see, I got my shit together at the end of October (literally yesterday, just barely in time for the month-end report) and pulled off a seasonal solo shoot. These were all shot with my Nikon Z6 using the basic 24-200 kit lens that came with it, and using my phone as remote control and shutter release via the Nikon SnapBridge app. The…

Hidden Worlds Newsletter No. 9: Halloween 2025

Holy shit, my friends, it’s Halloween! Yes, I know. Yes, technically Halloween was yesterday. But I’m spooky year round. It’s always Halloween in my black and putrid heart, and I’ve decided that if I can get my hands on some deeply-discount decorations, my I’m Now Officially Middle-Aged crisis is going manifest as making yard is also spooky all year round. Month in Review October started strong, despite the unseasonable warmth. I took in a couple orders. I put up a bat signal for models to do seasonal shoots. I got in some real quality time with my sketchbooks. I fell behind during the second week. I’m not really sure how.…

Hidden World Newsletter no.2 Feb 2025

Hello, friends! Wow, February has been a … wild, wild ride. As the meme goes: The Horrors persist, but so do I. Month in Review There’s been so much going on this month that I’ve … kinda lost track. I have, in fact, run myself a little ragged. It’s been a very good month for my fiction and my photography. I’ve dropped a new chapter of The Prince’s Fighters to Patreon every Sunday, plus drafts of the novel and web page cover arts. I’ve released five photography sets; granted, two are from the same session with Luxa, and two of the others are experiments to familiarize myself with my new…

Hidden Worlds Newsletter No.1: January 2025

Oh, merciless gods, comrades … January has been a wild and terrible ride. I’ve mentioned it on my patreon and in one or two discord conversations, but … during the blizzard that shut down Kansas City (and large swaths of Kansas, Missouri, and parts further east), my father succumbed to cancer at the age of 74. His funeral was the following Sunday. Since then, I have been … restless and poorly focused. The inauguration of our Evil Orange, the disorder that led up to it, and the ongoing chaotic fascist blitzkrieg that followed, are not helping at all. After months (actually, literally years) of talking about it, I have finally…

National Novel Writing Month: Arguably The Craziest Thing I Do

Every November I participate in the global creative challenge known as National Novel Writing Month. The challenge is simple: fifty thousand words on a new novel projects, written entirely between the first and thirtieth of November. One thousand six hundred and sixty seven words each day. Yes, including Thanksgiving. And my birthday, for that matter. Good, bad, or ugly, it’s a fucking frenzy. And without for a moment advocating that anyone else join that frenzy, I fucking love it. My first NaNoWriMo was November of 2008. My life in St. Louis had just failed. I had moved in with my grandfather in Kansas City. I was looking for work at…

    Episode 01-04: Margaret Braet

Hello, and welcome to the Hidden Worlds Podcast, where we talk about the experiences of art and magic and the search for meaning. In this episode, I interview Margaret Braet, bench jeweler, wax carver, lapidary artist, and all around mad genius. I worked with Margaret at the day job for a couple years before she moved on to greater adventures in pursuit of her art. I learned a lot from her then and in this interview, and I am so excited to share our conversation. Unfortunately, her latest job has a noncompete contract that required her to shut down her store and portfolio, but I’ve included one of her magnificent…

    Episode 01-03: John Lenz

Hello, and welcome to the Hidden Worlds Podcast, where we talk about the experiences of art and magic and the search for meaning. In this episode, I interview John Lenz. John is an artist and a magician operating out of the KC Metro Area, where he is a manager at Aquarius Books. With an AA in Interior Design and a BFA in Sculpture, he works in numerous media – is always looking for new ones, in fact. He has studied a variety of traditions including eclectic Wicca and Chaos Magick since 1980, and is always looking for ways to incorporate symbolism, magick and mythology into his art. His work can…
